The traditional Kiwi bach or crib combines simplicity of design with a seaside location. This family beach house shares both those attributes – but that’s where the resemblance ends. The owners had commissioned a strikingly modernistic design to withstand harsh coastal conditions while providing an easy environment for holiday living. The concept called for industrial materials, such as concrete, to be blended with more traditional materials, such as cedar.
From a construction point of view, there was nowhere to hide. Any flaws in building technique would be ruthlessly exposed. The result is a home unlike anything else around it. But perhaps the real test, which it passes with flying colours, is that it is also extremely comfortable.
